LECOM Health has become the first healthcare provider in the Erie region to offer amyloid-targeting therapies for treating early symptomatic Alzheimer’s Disease. These treatments, Leqembi and Kisunla, are monoclonal antibodies that target the amyloid-beta cascade, potentially slowing disease progression.
The medication is administered as an infusion lasting between 30 minutes to one hour every two to four weeks over approximately 18 months. These therapies aim to remove beta-amyloid proteins from the brain, which are associated with Alzheimer's.
“Amyloid-targeting therapies represent a groundbreaking advancement in the fight against mild Alzheimer’s disease dementia, offering renewed hope to affected individuals and their families,” said James Lin, D.O., President of the LECOM Institute for Successful Living. “Unlike traditional approaches, these therapies target one of the disease’s root causes rather than merely addressing its symptoms. By slowing disease progression, the infusions not only transform the treatment landscape but also highlight the critical importance of early detection and diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease. This proactive approach marks a pivotal step in redefining Alzheimer’s, shifting it from an inevitable decline to a more manageable condition.”
Patients must meet specific criteria involving PET scans and MRI before beginning therapy. Genetic factors and medical history will also influence eligibility for these treatments.
Leqembi (lecanemab-irmb) and Kisunla (donanemab-azbt) received approval within the last two years, with ongoing studies assessing their safety and effectiveness. Side effects can include flu-like symptoms from infusions or more severe issues like blood accumulation in the brain.
Those interested should consult their primary care provider or neurologist about suitability for this treatment. Providers may refer patients to LECOM Institute for Successful Living at 5535 Peach Street by calling 814-868-3488.
