Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) has commenced construction on its new campus at Jacksonville University, marking the establishment of the region's first medical school. This facility, located at the university's growing Medical Mall, aims to enhance healthcare education and training in Northeast Florida.
"LECOM has always been dedicated to advancing medical education, and the opening of our new campus in Jacksonville is a pivotal moment for the region’s healthcare future," stated John M. Ferretti, D.O., President and CEO of LECOM.
The project involves an investment of $50 million from LECOM, with projections indicating an economic impact of $91.1 million for Florida and Jacksonville. By 2030, the endeavor is expected to create over 600 jobs and contribute $60 million annually to the economy.
As the nation's largest medical college, LECOM is noted for producing numerous primary care physicians. Its modern, cost-effective educational model is part of its longstanding tradition of leading in medical training.
Silvia M. Ferretti, D.O., Provost of LECOM, commented on the quality of the educational environment being developed: "This facility will provide our students with cutting-edge resources and hands-on learning opportunities, preparing them to excel in their medical careers and contribute to the advancement of healthcare in the region."
Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan lauded the addition of the medical school to the city's academic and healthcare fabric, underscoring its potential to bolster the city's medical resources and meet the needs of Jacksonville's expanding population.
The inaugural class of approximately 75 students for the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine program is scheduled for 2026, with expectations of increasing to 150 students annually in five years.
President of Jacksonville University, Tim Cost, emphasized the transformative impact of the new campus: "LECOM at Jacksonville University, anchored within our expanding Medical Mall, will transform the north end of our campus into a hub for healthcare innovation."
Clinical education partners, including Baptist Health and Nemours Children's Health, will support third- and fourth-year students with hands-on training opportunities. The presence of LECOM at Jacksonville University is expected to further solidify the city's standing as a center for healthcare education and innovation.
LECOM at Jacksonville University is LECOM's fifth campus, joining existing locations in Florida, New York, and Pennsylvania. The institution maintains partnerships with over 100 hospitals and clinics in ten states, solidifying its national reach in osteopathic medical education.
