As the year draws to a close, Pennsylvania State Senator Dan Laughlin reflects on legislative achievements and ongoing efforts. The recent two-year session of the Pennsylvania General Assembly concluded with several key accomplishments.

Senator Laughlin expressed gratitude for his re-election, stating, "I am thankful to the people of Erie County for choosing to return me to the Pennsylvania Senate for another four years so I can keep working for every resident of our great county."

A notable achievement is Erie’s eligibility to apply for participation in Pennsylvania's City Revitalization and Improvement Zone (CRIZ) program. Laughlin explained that former Governor Tom Wolf had placed a moratorium on new CRIZ designations, which was lifted with the 2024-25 state budget completion. He emphasized, "After nearly eight years of advocacy and working toward the goal, I’m proud this catalyst for economic and community resurgence is within Erie’s grasp."

Additionally, legislation sponsored by Laughlin now allows judges to include pets in protection from abuse orders. This law aims to prevent offenders from using animals as tools in domestic violence situations. Laughlin remarked, "We are saying no one should have to choose between their own safety and the well-being of their companion animals."

Another law addresses squatter issues by codifying case law in Pennsylvania. Laughlin noted that this provides more certainty for homeowners, landlords, and law enforcement dealing with squatters. He stated, "This new law restores a sense of security and justice for those who have invested their dreams, savings and emotions into their properties."

Laughlin also collaborated with Republican colleagues to manage state spending effectively. He said these efforts have improved Pennsylvania's long-term economic outlook by avoiding future deficits that could lead to higher taxes.

However, not all initiatives were successful. Efforts such as allowing hunting on Sundays faced obstacles but will be reintroduced next year. Other proposals related to immigration enforcement notifications, coastal erosion financial burdens, public transportation management modernization, adult-use marijuana legalization, independent voter primary election participation, solar power access expansion, child exploitation laws update, drug overdose recovery assistance processes creation, and Flagship Niagara license plate revival remain priorities.

Laughlin concluded by expressing his commitment: "There’s still plenty of work to be done." He thanked constituents for their confidence and wished them happy holidays.
