HARRISBURG – The Pennsylvania Infrastructure Investment Authority (PENNVEST) has approved more than $2.4 million in funding for the North East Township Water and Sewer Authority. The funding will be used for an important sewer extension project that aims to improve water and sewer services in the area.
Sen. Dan Laughlin (R-49) announced the funding, stating that the North East Township Water and Sewer Authority will receive a $2.44 million loan to extend existing public sewage service to approximately 112 homes, two businesses, and several developable lots. The extension will span 17,000 feet and run along State Route 5, Gay Road, and Seitzinger Road. It will terminate at the township's border with the town of Ripley, Chautauqua County, New York.
Laughlin emphasized the significance of this project in addressing existing issues with septic systems and wastewater disposal in the area. He stated, "According to local officials, there are numerous properties known to have malfunctioning on-lot septic systems, aged small flow treatment facilities, or direct wildcat discharges into Lake Erie and its tributaries. Additionally, recent soil surveys indicate a heavy presence of silt loam in the area which is unfavorable for continued use of conventional on-lot wastewater disposal systems."
The sewer extension project aims to prevent pollutants from contaminating local water resources, safeguarding the environment and public health. Laughlin expressed his pride in advocating for this funding, recognizing its importance in protecting the community's water resources.
PENNVEST, responsible for the funding allocation, operates independently of the state's General Fund budget. The funding is derived from a combination of federal funds, prior bond issues by the state, and proceeds from the Marcellus Shale Impact Fee legislation, Act 13 of 2012.
This funding approval marks a significant step forward in improving water and sewer services in North East Township. The sewer extension project will provide essential infrastructure upgrades, addressing the existing challenges faced by the community. With the funding secured, the North East Township Water and Sewer Authority can now move forward with implementing the necessary improvements.
