The state Senate has unanimously approved legislation that aims to modernize Pennsylvania's public transportation systems. Senate Bill 597, sponsored by Sen. Dan Laughlin (R-49), seeks to provide funding predictability and local control over spending decisions in order to ensure that public transportation can continue to serve citizens across the state.
Laughlin explained the purpose of the bill, stating, "We need to make sure these systems can continue to contribute to mobility, economic vitality, sustainability, and enhanced quality of life throughout our state." He emphasized the importance of public transportation, noting that it provides over one million rides each day in all 67 counties of Pennsylvania.
The legislation, SB 597, addresses the diverse funding challenges faced by public transportation systems in a comprehensive manner. It focuses on capital funding predictability and ensuring that funding is spent according to local decision-making. Laughlin emphasized the need for local control over transportation decisions and a more predictable planning process for providers of this vital service.
Laughlin's bill will now move to the House of Representatives for consideration. If approved, it will bring about important changes in the management of public transportation systems in Pennsylvania, providing stability and local autonomy in funding decisions.
