Behrend soccer teams open seasons at Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament

The Penn State Behrend women’s soccer team opened its season with a 4-1 win over Franciscan in the first round of the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament. The Lions lost to Baldwin Wallace in the championship game. The men’s team finished the tournament with two draws.

Behrend’s cross-country, volleyball, golf, tennis and water polo teams also were in action last week. Here are the scores and highlights:

Men’s soccer

Penn State Behrend 0, Wooster 0

Penn State Behrend 0, Franciscan 0

Sam York, a senior from Akron, Ohio, made five saves against Franciscan.

Women’s soccer

Baldwin Wallace 3, Penn State Behrend 2

Penn State Behrend 4, Franciscan 1

Mia Zec, a junior from Cranberry Township, scored two goals in each of Behrend's games in the Herb Lauffer Memorial Tournament. Bella Sestito, a senior from Pittsburgh, had a goal and an assist against Franciscan.

Men’s cross-country

Sixth (of eight teams) at the Houghton Invitational

Nick Temel, a senior from Conneaut Lake, finished the 5K race in 16:59.99, placing 38th. Aidan Domencic, a senior from Cranberry Township, finished in 17:01.81, placing 40th. One of his shoes came off a quarter-mile into the race.

Women’s cross-country

Fourth (of eight teams) at the Houghton Invitational

Olivia Nola, a sophomore from Erie, finished the 4K race in 15:07.18. She placed fourth in a field of 81 runners. Lindsey Hartle, a freshman from Pittsburgh, finished in 15:55.06. She placed 15th.

Women’s volleyball

Penn State Behrend 3, Buffalo State 2

Rochester 3, Penn State Behrend 0

Hiram 3, Penn State Behrend 2

Brooke Joncas, a senior from Corry, recorded 16 kills and 10 digs against Hiram. Meg Goodsel, a junior from Corry, had a career-high 30 assists against Buffalo State.

Men’s golf

Fourth (of six teams) at the Wooster Gatorade Intercollegiate Tournament

Jake Caldwell, a junior from Belle Vernon, tied for ninth overall with a two-day score of 150. Ryan Johnson, a senior from Centre Hall, tied for 13th overall with a two-day score of 152.

Women’s tennis

Geneva 5, Penn State Behrend 4

Erica Jasinski, a senior from Fairview, won at No. 1 singles with scores of 6-2, 6-2. She teamed with Rachel Weber, a senior from Allison Park, to win at No. 1 doubles, finishing 8-3.

Men’s water polo

Long Island University 20, Penn State Behrend 4

Ethan Friedman, a freshman from Valley Center, California, made eight saves. He also recorded two steals.
