South Hall opens doors to residents this fall

South Hall sits on the corner of Eighth and Sassafras Streets. It is Gannon's newest residence hall.

Move in day approaches on campus and construction is wrapping up at the corner of Eighth and Sassafras streets. South Hall will welcome residents into the $11 million dollar facility on Aug. 19.

The Gannon family’s newest residence hall boasts four floors of single and multi-student suites. Occupants will enjoy private bedrooms and bathrooms as well as shared living spaces.

South Hall offers practical conveniences, namely kitchens on each floor and laundry appliances in the building’s lower level, parking spaces and optional private storage areas. Three live-in resident assistants will provide guidance and support to students.

These amenities are paired with a tranquil color palette as the renovation aesthetic aims to mirror a different phase of daytime across each floor.

The fourth-floor community lounge offers four functional garage doors that will open in the warm months to overlook I-HACK and will draw in the morning’s rising sun. Pops of luminous yellow and blue invite the rising sun inside. The third floor utilizes beach glass tones to mimic daytime, and the second floor moves into a dropping sunset color scheme with bold oranges and yellows. The lower level aptly provides muted nighttime ambience in its shared lounge.

“Erie has such amazing sun-shows and we wanted to try to give each floor its own personality. The theme will be hinted at with artwork, photos, accent walls and colorful furniture pieces,” said Residence Life Director, Denise Golden, Ed. D.

Golden described the “sophisticated school spirit” of the first-floor’s theme. Maroon and gold pull the campus into the sun cycle design concept, welcoming student residents into a new day.

South Hall joins the university’s greater residence life network as part of Gannon’s master plan for enhancing residential opportunities for students and others in downtown Erie. Golden explained, “We are focusing on providing a transformative engagement experience, improving the quality of our current facilities, and adding single bedroom spaces where possible. South Hall helps tremendously with the addition of 95 single bedroom spaces in a beautifully appointed building that will inspire residents to get out and enjoy the space and the company of each other.”

The opening of South Hall comes at a time when the university’s enrollment is growing. The university is expecting record enrollment this fall.
