Erie postal worker Richard Hopkins says postmaster discussed backdating mail-in ballots

Richard Hopkins, an Erie-based postal worker, has come forward with an affidavit alleging supervisors in his post office were involved in a plot to backdate ballots after the election.

“Postmaster Rob Weisenbach directed my co-workers and I to pick up ballots after Election Day and provide them to him,” Hopkins said in an affidavit. “As discussed more fully below, I heard Weisenbach tell a supervisor at my office that Weisenbach was back-dating the postmarks on the ballots to make it appear as though the ballots had been collected on November 3, 2020 despite them in fact being collected on November 4 and possibly later.”

U.S. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) announced over the weekend that Hopkins provided a sworn affidavit to the Trump campaign alleging supervisors in his office developed a plot to backdate ballots after the election.

“I will be calling on the Department of Justice to investigate these claims,” Graham (R-SC) said. “I’ll also be in contact with the Postmaster General, requesting he to look into these allegations, ones that may follow, and help secure the testimony of Mr. Hopkins. Mr. Hopkins is entitled to all whistleblower protections, and I will ensure they extend to other postal workers who may come forward with claims of irregulates, misconduct, fraud, etc.”

In a recent interview, Hopkins spoke about his fellow postal employees and the allegations he has made.

“I did not witness him backdate it, I witnessed him talking about backdating it,” Hopkins said of Weisenbach.

Hopkins said after he came out publicly he has received push back at work as well as a visit from postal inspectors.

“They said that because of certain factors I was implicated as the one who came out,” Hopkins said. “So they wanted to get my side of the story because they wanted to start an investigation into this. I think this comes from above them and that is what I told the postal inspectors. I think they were just doing what they were told.”

It is unclear how many ballots may have been affected.

“I am nervous because this is a big deal," Hopkins said.

Hopkins has set up a GoFundMe account. In only two days it has raised $125,358.

Weisenbach has denied Hopkins' account, according to the Erie Times-News.
