State Senator Dan Laughlin revealed that Erie will receive $10 million in PENNVEST funding to aid the second phase of the Erie City Water Authority’s project to replace aging galvanized water service lines. This effort aims to improve water quality in environmental justice communities.
The funding, derived from a mix of loan and non-repayment funding, will address around 1,250 outdated water lines previously linked to lead components, which are potential health hazards. “This funding represents a significant investment in Erie’s future, ensuring our residents—particularly those in disadvantaged communities—have access to clean, safe drinking water,” stated Sen. Laughlin.
The Erie City Water Authority, which serves over 31,000 households, will utilize the funding to improve infrastructure and ensure the safety of the water supply. The financial package comprises about $9.6 million in non-repayment funds and $414,900 in low-interest loans, sparing residents an anticipated 92% increase in water costs. This initiative is set to begin in January 2026 and expected to complete by November 2028.
