Legislation proposed by Senator Dan Laughlin aimed at holding illegal migrants accountable for breaking Pennsylvania laws has progressed out of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Senate Bill 471, which mirrors a previous bill, would mandate that Commonwealth attorneys notify U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during criminal proceedings involving illegal migrants. The earlier version of this bill had passed the Senate with significant bipartisan support.

Senator Laughlin highlighted incidents such as the murder of Laken Hope Riley and attacks on NYPD officers as evidence of the need for this legislation. “The tragic murder of Laken Hope Riley and the violent attacks on NYPD officers by individuals who should not have been in this country underscore the urgent need for action,” Laughlin stated. He emphasized that Pennsylvania must take steps to prevent such crimes by ensuring offenders are not released back into communities.

The bill seeks to address concerns about repeat offenders who illegally enter or remain in the country and commit crimes without being reported to federal authorities. “This bill is about protecting law-abiding Pennsylvanians and ensuring that law enforcement has the tools necessary to keep our communities safe,” Laughlin added. He stressed that Pennsylvania must clearly communicate it will not shelter those who violate its laws.

With committee approval secured, Senate Bill 471 now advances to the full Senate for further consideration.
