U.S. Representative Mike Kelly of Pennsylvania will conduct a telephone town hall on July 8 to address fraud prevention and offer strategies for protecting personal information. Officials from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will also participate, providing insights and responding to questions.
The event follows the FBI’s April release of its Internet Crime Report, which highlighted that over $16 billion was stolen by scammers in 2024—a 33% increase from the previous year. “My office often received numerous calls from constituents who remain incredibly concerned about, or have even fallen victim to, scams and fraud,” stated Rep. Kelly. “Our goal with this live telephone town hall is to give Pennsylvanians the tools necessary to fight back and to protect their personal information at a time when scams and fraud are on the rise. We hope you can join us!”
Details of the town hall include participation by Rep. Mike Kelly along with experts from the FTC and FBI. The session is scheduled for Tuesday, July 8, 2025, at 6:30 p.m. ET, accessible via a pinless participant dial-in number at 855-531-1063 or through a livestream on Facebook.com/MikeKellyPA.
According to the FBI’s Internet Crime Report, phishing/spoofing, extortion, and personal data breaches were identified as the top three cybercrimes based on victim complaints in 2024. Investment fraud losses involving cryptocurrency amounted to more than $6.5 billion.
Recently reported incidents in Pennsylvania include an investigation by state police into a cybertheft case where a Crawford County couple lost over $2,000 and warnings about an ongoing fake inheritance scam issued by state officials.
