Senator Dan Laughlin has announced that nearly $7.7 million in funds have been awarded to various communities and school districts in Erie County. The Commonwealth Financing Authority (CFA) allocated approximately $5.3 million from the Local Share Account (LSA) and an additional $2.4 million through the Public School Facility Improvement Grant Program (PSFIG).

“This funding coming to Erie County municipalities will be used either directly or indirectly to improve the lives of the residents of each assisted community,” said Laughlin. “I’m glad to have helped secure this money for these important projects and purchases.”

Erie City will benefit from five out of 18 municipal projects, with a significant grant of $750,000 dedicated to reconstructing a section of West 8th Street between Liberty Street and Weschler Avenue.

Outside Erie City, Union Township received the largest LSA grant amounting to $683,300 for renovating a building intended to replace the current township municipal building.

The Local Share Account funds originate from the PA Race Horse Development and Gaming Act (Act 71 of 2004), which allocates gaming revenues via the CFA for public interest projects across Pennsylvania.

Regarding PSFIG awards, several school districts received funding aimed at facility improvements within public schools and technical schools as part of Pennsylvania’s General Fund budget.

The Commonwealth Financing Authority was created in 2004 as an independent body under the Department of Community and Economic Development, tasked with managing economic stimulus initiatives in Pennsylvania.
